William Herschel was an astronomer who discovered the planet Uranus and two of its moons. He was born in the Kingdom of Hanover in 1783 (now in Germany) and moved to England in 1757. His discovery of Uranus made him the first astronomer to discover a new planet in the solar system. Prior to its discovery, all of the solar system's other known planets had been observed since ancient times.
